The first goal and the reason for cranking up the blog again is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge for 2021.</p><p>I started doing it a few years ago, and got about halfway through the year. I made these Boxy Star blocks</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggFnJTKFPBuZp6RAloyuwyNrQbV5jXfivjsIIM42OQ13yvjF07We0YT0JahsitzwM4uDJOnkIiMsm_UnrOthhCpnp5hyphenhyphenL3bPCNMbBgEct1bHpYBgpbQC1Fn1P-n-IMcAgWYHPwwaVDEMA/s2048/20210103_142522.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1383" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggFnJTKFPBuZp6RAloyuwyNrQbV5jXfivjsIIM42OQ13yvjF07We0YT0JahsitzwM4uDJOnkIiMsm_UnrOthhCpnp5hyphenhyphenL3bPCNMbBgEct1bHpYBgpbQC1Fn1P-n-IMcAgWYHPwwaVDEMA/s320/20210103_142522.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I need to get it finished, so will make some blocks when the month is a colour I dont have. Obviously pink is already covered.</p><p>The second project to make for the RSC is Pretty Birds. The pattern is by The Sewing Loft. I am going to make a 12 inch and 2 6 inch blocks each month. The setting is from last years Sisters sew along by abyquilts. I made the first two 6 inch birds this morning. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpRHsOW-p8vLzPezdcb08jkesPPNcR9vcQFUTANbg2hhtNiGNRqEhQb1LzIXGpyVpOn15vYZKVdpGQjFathd0oOWZsylKBbkr_yLVoJdH3ixt3RVD4ys6HfZTGos6TK0QwnHxONgiHyiE/s2048/20210103_135706.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1310" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpRHsOW-p8vLzPezdcb08jkesPPNcR9vcQFUTANbg2hhtNiGNRqEhQb1LzIXGpyVpOn15vYZKVdpGQjFathd0oOWZsylKBbkr_yLVoJdH3ixt3RVD4ys6HfZTGos6TK0QwnHxONgiHyiE/s320/20210103_135706.jpg" /></a></div><p>I have also signed up for the Observatory BOM Katie from Swim Bike Quilt</p><br /><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJug9vkjg-zq39LfKXGZE4YZT-Bdt1v0qIdGL9CwjGoAb5h8uiNZAP2vCO00i0RKf9mbDOU-jJF8PdGBoUmk_rFXwQpjNdin__d5kYDI84XfvfY1LMS2c9crWLcrZhgJlzOPWl7Hf_8-c/s2048/20210103_152245.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJug9vkjg-zq39LfKXGZE4YZT-Bdt1v0qIdGL9CwjGoAb5h8uiNZAP2vCO00i0RKf9mbDOU-jJF8PdGBoUmk_rFXwQpjNdin__d5kYDI84XfvfY1LMS2c9crWLcrZhgJlzOPWl7Hf_8-c/s320/20210103_152245.jpg" /></a></div>Katie said she was making hers in Ombre Fairy Dust fabric, which made me look how much of the Ombre Confetti Metallic I had left. I think I have nearly enough, but am lacking one set of colours, so I have ordered that. I won't be using a full rainbow, but the colours look good together. <div><br /></div><div>My other goals revolve around finishing started tops, plus a couple of abandoned UFOs. I have a pile of completed tops I would like to make some progress with in quilting and completing some.</div><div><br /></div><div>That should keep me busy for the year plus allow for some new things to sneak in.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>I didn't get this liked in good time, perhaps next week or even next month I will do better</div>Beausoleil Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16311722119881974833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9002975730562463118.post-31137640231647946602020-12-31T00:20:00.003-08:002020-12-31T14:01:34.591-08:00Catch up 2<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"> It is New Years Eve, so to be ready and all caught up before January 1 2021, I have a few more finishes to post. </span></div><p></p><p>If I am looking for a photo of one of my quilts, I always look here. A year of lockdowns, and of reflection. <p></p><p>New Zealand has had an easier time than more highly populated countries, the benefit of it being an isolated country at the bottom of the world.</p><p>We enjoyed our 6 weeks of isolation from March 26. I spent it mainly at the sewing machine. I had daily challenges to myself, and goals, which were surpassed mostly.</p><p>In the spirit of goal setting I have decided to join the Rainbow Scrap Challenge for 2021. I started several years ago, but other things got in the way halfway through the year. This year I plan to finish this quilt - Boxy Kites by Bonnie Hunter in months were the colour is not already completed.</p><p>Also I will make 3 blocks in each month- 2 of 6 inch and one 12 inch. My block will be Pretty Birds by the sewing loft</p><p> https://thesewingloftblog.com/pretty-bird-quilt-block-blocks-2-quilt/</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiErxlqalKyBXv69htKtF3p846evL7ldIALAQShmEIjct5Wuqubq-z5SuRdD57iakSQntH2vk-PtxChPNkwPQicOfQnBCLM6yNYrNwSB-pf_Vwaa2n8DmBjJ2YtEBvHcZKayu5CMtpmMRc/s1536/Pretty-Bird-Quilt-Block-Cover-1187x1536.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="1187" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiErxlqalKyBXv69htKtF3p846evL7ldIALAQShmEIjct5Wuqubq-z5SuRdD57iakSQntH2vk-PtxChPNkwPQicOfQnBCLM6yNYrNwSB-pf_Vwaa2n8DmBjJ2YtEBvHcZKayu5CMtpmMRc/s320/Pretty-Bird-Quilt-Block-Cover-1187x1536.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p>In order to give a Kickstart to blogging again, I need to go through my photos to catalogue what I can of the quilts I have completed since my last entry. I spent a couple of days with no ideas, then started thinking of fruit. A lemon tree appealed, then a pineapple came to mind. A young friend loves pineapples, in fact that was the theme of her 13th birthday.<br />
The quilted item which would work in her life would be a pillow for her bedroom, so my plan was made.<br />
<br />
I made a yellow patchwork block for the pineapple and a green one for the leaves.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfTZc5r7wJTRmtARfTv77tiDJW9fu2WVsK8RbqBHO7ekl8kV5ka0KsX0H9tagRAv2H4nRoOT3bUB4zJAeeUAA8HQVjJmkqQc-R7VC613iKvgKHjLTylZKZI4AkQCVWIV4l-ZDbqx20edY/s1600/20180225_181641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfTZc5r7wJTRmtARfTv77tiDJW9fu2WVsK8RbqBHO7ekl8kV5ka0KsX0H9tagRAv2H4nRoOT3bUB4zJAeeUAA8HQVjJmkqQc-R7VC613iKvgKHjLTylZKZI4AkQCVWIV4l-ZDbqx20edY/s320/20180225_181641.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Pellon was ironed on to the pieces so the pineapple would be raised a little trapanto style.<br />
The shapes were cut out on the angle to represent the outside relief of a pineapple skin. They were buttonhole stitched on to the background. The background colour was chosen to match the fabric I had chosen for the cushion back- pineapples on a navy backgound.<br />
The pineapple was quilted in gold with echoes each side of the seams and the leaves with just a central vein.<br />
The background was stippled in matching thread. The stipple was very small close to the pineapple to further accenuate the fruit, and the stipple becoming larger to the edges<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was now time to quilt the back and fit an enclosed zip. </div>

<br />
As a New Zealander, our biggest hero when we were growing up was Sir Edmund Hillary. As well as being the first to conquer Everest, on 29th May 1953, he spent months each year building schools and hospitals in Nepal.<br />
He was always a much admired man who the country was very proud of.<br />
<br />
As soon as I saw this week'<br />
Project Quilting theme, Sie Ed (as he was affectionately known later in his life) came to mind.<br />
<br />
I found the image I always think of when thinking of the conquering, and set out to recreate it.<br />
My friend Denny (Instagram name @pondaview) loves making fabric postcards, and learning new techniques. She has always done silhouettes, so I decided I would give that a go,<br />
As I was sewingit a progress photo was sent to Denny. She suggested I add a layer of tulle to give the look of distance to the work.<br />
I love the look the tulle gives to the ice.<br />

<br />
When thinking about this for a few days, I thought I would do Half Square Triangles in blues, aqua and lime green.<br />
By later in the week I tealised I may not have time to participate this week.<br />
On Sunday, I was up to date on a couple of things, so decided to go for it. Participating is the main thing for me, rather than winning prizes. It was too early in the year to bale out a week already.<br />
<br />
I made myself a couple of rules so that I could get this completely finished.<br />
1. It had to use scraps<br />
2. No procrastinating and no changing my mind.<br />
3. No unpicking. If a point is lost-it stays lost forever.<br />
I picked up the first bag of scraps from the bin. Light taupe dot background and fabrics of pink and green. A classic combo.<br />
<br />
I laid out the 81 HSTs I had made into a design-and according to my rule-that was it. No changing - No making it less "arranged or changing the design<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAKpiW-T-ynGxIT3dobDpv9EMr3CysDhpbdCdFnjH04zaZV4vyuml_sO212ylFPIrwn6UqypFINejQAnzeb82fyONmdw45KjjCmfIYRh4tjbD_j54JeWv1A7m-v0B8w2o73YaF_n5laM4/s1600/20180128_104110.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAKpiW-T-ynGxIT3dobDpv9EMr3CysDhpbdCdFnjH04zaZV4vyuml_sO212ylFPIrwn6UqypFINejQAnzeb82fyONmdw45KjjCmfIYRh4tjbD_j54JeWv1A7m-v0B8w2o73YaF_n5laM4/s320/20180128_104110.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It went together pretty well, then I quilted it to emphasise the background diamond.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now the binding. It went on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJzK-vQl_cDXsBUaW0CF_36lR4s4JOJ93pfopeCpQZnyEedpEppTdY2HEmOCp7h69n4yiqjVvvbzoWzK25iK09NhMrq2Zy7m0UIGHGFNQcpQJIxBhyuSvgvK0cMv-5vEVhQ4jCVs1-Hs8/s1600/20180128_143540.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1454" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJzK-vQl_cDXsBUaW0CF_36lR4s4JOJ93pfopeCpQZnyEedpEppTdY2HEmOCp7h69n4yiqjVvvbzoWzK25iK09NhMrq2Zy7m0UIGHGFNQcpQJIxBhyuSvgvK0cMv-5vEVhQ4jCVs1-Hs8/s320/20180128_143540.jpg" width="290" /></a></div>
Ugh. Didn't like it. I broke my own rules as it just wasn't right.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp9b0T3KPz-cKNrpDrHtEoWyBBJHJ19ODgWbKr9hYEqBBBiXfUgnaNOv9XbWMd0V57etr4za4qrCgrf_XoAvo5WDHJrtbRqLu574oLxqY1R9Y4eTxxI7JnKRCLJ8dQEbhEAircw4iEmwY/s1600/20180128_151947.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1289" data-original-width="1600" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp9b0T3KPz-cKNrpDrHtEoWyBBJHJ19ODgWbKr9hYEqBBBiXfUgnaNOv9XbWMd0V57etr4za4qrCgrf_XoAvo5WDHJrtbRqLu574oLxqY1R9Y4eTxxI7JnKRCLJ8dQEbhEAircw4iEmwY/s320/20180128_151947.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
We live a few minutes from the town of Feilding in the North Island of New Zealand. It has a population of about 16,000.<br />
<br />
When I was thinking about the challenge two things came to mind. One was was the fact that Feilding has won the title of Most Beautiful Town many times.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijh6oJhKRQIX_H-KsPHyTaCbVuNeZSlQOC1fVzkUuTfF-x7Rrtv6VdpzzHAvADV-YJJPgUv5ebBJbFHG3xSA-EMMWNl9WMwpQ9YoK9NLoCpYyeRqpPf7Izx7TqxT65F4vI5XsB9jZv_QI/s1600/20180108_135552.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijh6oJhKRQIX_H-KsPHyTaCbVuNeZSlQOC1fVzkUuTfF-x7Rrtv6VdpzzHAvADV-YJJPgUv5ebBJbFHG3xSA-EMMWNl9WMwpQ9YoK9NLoCpYyeRqpPf7Izx7TqxT65F4vI5XsB9jZv_QI/s320/20180108_135552.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The second was the clock tower, which seems to be used as the towns image most often. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are many floral plantings around the town. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This year there are many different flowers used. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decided to look at a simple representation of this planting box. There are several planters with these flowers in one of the shopping streets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuHn9rOudwb9icXTMEGX6LSN-xVaS4L0zILq4nG7GE6trZ8aFk0ukFPhuL2tmw1iEywpO2TV9tvEINfv6Jx2FrSSzlN8uBUQC7PuMurqD4fJJ9VG0AT4zI04jht6AKqQKts3vmBItN8Hw/s1600/20180108_133600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuHn9rOudwb9icXTMEGX6LSN-xVaS4L0zILq4nG7GE6trZ8aFk0ukFPhuL2tmw1iEywpO2TV9tvEINfv6Jx2FrSSzlN8uBUQC7PuMurqD4fJJ9VG0AT4zI04jht6AKqQKts3vmBItN8Hw/s320/20180108_133600.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the red flowers (are they Helenium?) I used raw edge applique to sew on the leaves flowers and buds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdSXxSQWVREFKsqWAwF-Jc2FZl7S790qMvC66UEaGj7KwfREA9g0wZqTmivNEWJFKJXckmt99cFiyp3fYSCTJEzvdpSTuqQWakKeEJxvUYorUnCEOL2CjonKOih1P3oIYzp6WylabSOvI/s1600/20180110_092101.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1438" data-original-width="1600" height="287" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdSXxSQWVREFKsqWAwF-Jc2FZl7S790qMvC66UEaGj7KwfREA9g0wZqTmivNEWJFKJXckmt99cFiyp3fYSCTJEzvdpSTuqQWakKeEJxvUYorUnCEOL2CjonKOih1P3oIYzp6WylabSOvI/s320/20180110_092101.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The purple dianthus outer border in the planter is shown using a purple floral fabric i quilted it in pebbles to show the round flowers. It doesnt really show up well, but looks great on the inside.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg_AXKkJatrdEwkMdYnfwUG99vC0eSm4R7PDj4TCHAd5gGEbF6fHGlFFjTZwt-CIybn_zgv3JiM7hDgwg_p0EyYr_1X6DIVOMZB7Xk2Za-oMVRKLdPf7bkQRZebOHzyz1xLkXFGmfjEp0/s1600/20180110_092300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1377" data-original-width="1600" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg_AXKkJatrdEwkMdYnfwUG99vC0eSm4R7PDj4TCHAd5gGEbF6fHGlFFjTZwt-CIybn_zgv3JiM7hDgwg_p0EyYr_1X6DIVOMZB7Xk2Za-oMVRKLdPf7bkQRZebOHzyz1xLkXFGmfjEp0/s320/20180110_092300.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The planter is made from brick. I have used artistic licence to change this to red, simply because it is my mothers favourite colour. The scrappy red border is quilted in a brick design.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The charcoal binding represents the grouting of the planter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My mother wanted some new cushions so I decided to make my 16 inch quilt into one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the back I used a Cloud 9 canvas from their range designed by Rachida Hale-Coleman. It has a zip opening. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It started well with the 2016 Bonnie Hunter Mystery being completed quickly. After that it all slowed down.<br />

The next is a quick quilt I made for my Grandaughter Maisie. She went in to a big bed and needed a new quilt. I didnt have much spate time, so used a Riley Blake Mermaid panel and matching layer cake. </div>

I had a charm Pack of Birdie and Co's next winter range-Winterberry, so I couldn't resist making it. It is such a quick fun project that I had all except the binding done in one evening.<br />

This year is my fifth one.<br />
I decided to stay with Bonnie's colors this year, which were inspired by the lavender fields in Provence.<br />
<br />
Bonnie's Quilts have many many small pieces, but the process is broken into several easy easy parts. I find it easiest to keep up to date with each part, and that way it gets finished in good time.<br />
<br />
I free motion quilted this with a swirly Daisy all-over design.<br />
Size is 89.5 inches square.<br />

This is my third finish for the year.Beausoleil Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16311722119881974833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9002975730562463118.post-84158370821064439462017-01-22T22:25:00.002-08:002017-01-22T22:25:44.189-08:00Moonlit TreesIn December 2016 I decided to join in the Honey Pot Bee run by Molli Sparkles.<br />
Leading up to the start, a block was posted as a "teaser" It was the Improv Tree block designed by Amy Smart from<br />
I made my set of 2 Tree blocks and I enjoyed making them so much that I kust kept going. I kept to the blue /aqua colour range with grey for the second block colour.<br />
My blocks started at 8 1/2 inches square. Once the trunk was added the blocks were a trimmed down to 9 1/2 inches by 7.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg56JYmOUSy5DMgYETQa44AZ9lska3cIwkJouCBSX4S1Bu0Z4AgLFYI3DPtm4eHSuQJjR5L8poHEoFGBkZMopB20N8EwkdE6RVySr88LwnY8_fdeyjcegcm_TcMLAeEcdBXeF7FNaeM9Fo/s1600/20170112_102308.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg56JYmOUSy5DMgYETQa44AZ9lska3cIwkJouCBSX4S1Bu0Z4AgLFYI3DPtm4eHSuQJjR5L8poHEoFGBkZMopB20N8EwkdE6RVySr88LwnY8_fdeyjcegcm_TcMLAeEcdBXeF7FNaeM9Fo/s320/20170112_102308.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
I quilted this using a woodgrain pattern, which fitted in with the trees and with the modern feel to the quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This was a fun quick quilt which I loved making.<br />

The most unusual tree-the Dolphin tree.</div>
<br />
The finished size is 64 1/2 inches by 54.<br />
This is my second quilt finish for 2017.<br />
<br />Beausoleil Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16311722119881974833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9002975730562463118.post-75274106583088431792017-01-11T03:53:00.001-08:002017-01-11T03:53:14.071-08:00Point ZeroThis quilt comes from a Charms Swap with Ms Midge. The designer this time is Lizzy House. When the fabrics were in the album I had thought that this swap might not be so interesting as there were lots of the Pearl Bracelets fabrics. How wrong I was. They only added colour to the mix and were not at all boring.<br />
I started with simple split 9 patch blocks which I was intending to set into a star quilt. <br />
A friend was doing her charm quilt at the same time, and was doing something similar, although achieved with a different method. I therefore decided to change my setting.<br />
<br />
After playing a lot with the blocks, this is the one I liked best.<br />
I called the quilt Point Zero as it reminded me of arrows pointing in all different directions. <br />
Point Zero, in front of Notre Dame, being the place where all distances in France are measured from Paris. It is also the official centre of Paris.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5pv0TbjmF1Wm69l7aIA3l1c5gsl3JDqTMh0qg-ugeUU_OcmT1-QwwX2qCu4aiHdvwgn5CjJzRzyn-eDsfuKJqQI8T6aun-tPG7crKakBFlea11Vjl40nL3FFUAemzkH4XXVAr4L5qbQI/s1600/pointZero.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5pv0TbjmF1Wm69l7aIA3l1c5gsl3JDqTMh0qg-ugeUU_OcmT1-QwwX2qCu4aiHdvwgn5CjJzRzyn-eDsfuKJqQI8T6aun-tPG7crKakBFlea11Vjl40nL3FFUAemzkH4XXVAr4L5qbQI/s320/pointZero.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
For the background I used Lizzy's Whisper Palette fabrics. The low volume fabrics from the swap were also added into the background. I am really pleased with how this looks.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE-oovYInhW9R834TUvWAU2NVOJTyzvKO8B9vFSM2hJW2ltGtwlYsW0LUlEsqfsRlWzZM-l8zZv2KH9uTRlswo2o8qKq3_eU7yMkoVUDURVBHQhn-TNc4y_v7Zr77nb6fE6YGK6W7rwgQ/s1600/20170112_004353.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE-oovYInhW9R834TUvWAU2NVOJTyzvKO8B9vFSM2hJW2ltGtwlYsW0LUlEsqfsRlWzZM-l8zZv2KH9uTRlswo2o8qKq3_eU7yMkoVUDURVBHQhn-TNc4y_v7Zr77nb6fE6YGK6W7rwgQ/s320/20170112_004353.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
The many borders came about because I felt the quilt was too small. The 4 borders takes it to 72 inches square-a more useful size.<br />
The 3rd border came about because I had some Half square triangles left from making the blocks-not enough to go right around. I was thinking of making a partial row of HSTs on each side, but decided to make them into Quarter Square Triangles instead. They make their own design within the negative space, which I find pleasing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgB0qX2x7bt2-emjqQ2WhFz7rwx3iSI6k_39u2oNYAmy3AzSFczpNY6iuwzkCXcDih0rJhMhj1sTWEifYKCcBTGP5_5_L_bGxureh7r3Ef_-9XpoLYgl6sT7_-15OhXbrbf-3TFRVxJGQ/s1600/20170111_112156.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgB0qX2x7bt2-emjqQ2WhFz7rwx3iSI6k_39u2oNYAmy3AzSFczpNY6iuwzkCXcDih0rJhMhj1sTWEifYKCcBTGP5_5_L_bGxureh7r3Ef_-9XpoLYgl6sT7_-15OhXbrbf-3TFRVxJGQ/s320/20170111_112156.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
The quilting started off as just echoing the triangles to emphasise the direction they are pointing. After that each area was looked at seperately. The negative space all got straight lines in various directions. In the 3rd border the small triangles are outlined and echoed. The large borders presented the biggest decision making problem. In the end I kept with simple straight lines. It all looks great on the back, with lines going in all directions.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This has become my first finish for 2017.Beausoleil Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16311722119881974833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9002975730562463118.post-83251645889517512782016-12-18T16:49:00.002-08:002017-01-15T13:30:45.894-08:00More 2016 FinishesWith only a couple of weeks left for 2016, I have realised there are some quilts not blogged about. Given that is a diary of my quilt finishes, I need to fill in<br />
<br />
First that comes to mind are the baby Quilts.<br />
I was the only person who knew that Lukes new baby was to be a girl so I could make her quilt. <br />
Seeing the baby wasn't going to sleep in a cot, I decided a full single was a better idea. <br />
I decided on the Kittens Quilt by Elizabeth Hartman. For fabric, I have a lot of Pam Kitty Morning fabric which I also used for Maisies quilt, and it is perfect for wee girls. <br />
decisions made.<br />
This is Hazels Quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Once baby was named Hazel I had a bit of a problem. I couldn't help but make a Hazel Hedgehog quilt- another Elizabeth Hartman pattern. I had made one before for the Quilt Along held by Gnome Angel. That lives in Australia with Sienna, so I had to make another one. Again I turned to Pam Kitty Morning for the fabric. I made this a large cot size. It can be used as a play mat or whatever they find useful. <br />

My November finish was Summer Solstice. This was a quilt along with Melissa from Happy Quilting.<br />
The fabric is from the Eden range by Tula Pink. This one is 100 by 100 inches so is a biggie. I still manage to quilt it on my Bernina without any problem. <br />

I decided to make mine up in a cushion in colours matching the July Block I made into a table runner for her. <br />
Because her runner had a white background and a black and white print in it, I chose those as my 2 framing fabrics. I think they worked well, and is very different to the original, so shows how a lighter frame works. A border would show the block better, but I had already reached the size I wanted for the cushion<br />
<br />
My mother loves her cushion and it does go well with her runner, despite being a very different pattern. <br />

This month I decided to use and unusual fabric line Dapper by Luke Haynes for Moda. It is masculine but with pink and purple fabrics included. Mens shoes, and spectacles are amongst the fabric s in the line.<br />
I chose to do a 5 block quilt as in her quilt for May- <a href="https://upstairshobbyroom.blogspot.co.nz/2016/05/may-blooms-one-block-wonders-bom.html" target="_blank">May Flowers.</a><br />
I plan to put a row of the X's at the top and bottom, but it is again a busy month, and I haven't had time to finish the quilt but it is at the top of my list. I don't like to leave these BOMs unfinished at the end of a month, but will have to for this one. <br />
Rather than miss the parade of blocks on Upstairs Hobby Room Blog I will add my photo of the main part of the quilt.<br />

We used the No Waste method, which meant it went fairly quickly.<br />
Here are my piles of geese in Tula Pink's lovely Eden line.<br />

I love stars and so was very drawn to this block.<br />
Unfortunately this month was very busy quilting-wise so I didn't have time for a full quilt. I don't want to leave the work from the One Block Wonder finished at the end of each month, so always try to finish it on time, whatever I have decided to make. I decided to make a table mat for my mother from the block. She asked for bright and colourful.<br />
This was the result. It is deliberately scrappy, with the fabrics coming from my scrap bins or stash fat quarters. The red star points were bonus triangles from stitch and flip corners on a quilt I made a couple of years ago.<br />

Last month I was the lucky winner of the zips from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/zipit" target="_blank">zipit</a>. Jenny was really lovely to deal with as well as generous, and she has a great zip offering. I highly recommend her if you are looking for zips and friendly service. I asked for a selection of 22 inch zips, which is the size I use most often. Jenny sent me a wonderful rainbow of colour.<br />

The first part (cutting) has been posted so there is still plenty of time to join in.<br />
I have chosen to do a 4 by 4 layout of 20 inch blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsbeJ6FGWK-AF0olgzW-U-C4i0X6YUNILV5gap7wT4g_4YuXBpwQgKt7kI676nxeIuuYCPuIfjVgSuzmSFaRyC0StbLO2LZ0SkLjCcY-zIazpnPQ1dKLHmIDjdAJcjb4iyjJQ3Kew1R30/s1600/4%25252Bx%25252B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsbeJ6FGWK-AF0olgzW-U-C4i0X6YUNILV5gap7wT4g_4YuXBpwQgKt7kI676nxeIuuYCPuIfjVgSuzmSFaRyC0StbLO2LZ0SkLjCcY-zIazpnPQ1dKLHmIDjdAJcjb4iyjJQ3Kew1R30/s1600/4%25252Bx%25252B4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I am currently trying to use some of my collection of fabrics, so chose to use the lovely Eden line by Tula Pink. The hardest part was choosing 16 of the fabrics to use. <br />
<br />
After 2 days of cutting I am finally finished. I know I will be pleased it is all done as we go along, but there was an awful lot to do.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhITh3OOxtLkoWxFFfGagVNKgygrPOX_U-6F7I488CZ5npAGuad_I1L_IjKC6ndhFHZyNiqJGJjxBk0-9Qe3yBin473auJZtAPr7O-fhGikWkDb4Cv2hFzXLWxOPyhcUOlG8adPdPaE4cw/s1600/20160706_221039.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhITh3OOxtLkoWxFFfGagVNKgygrPOX_U-6F7I488CZ5npAGuad_I1L_IjKC6ndhFHZyNiqJGJjxBk0-9Qe3yBin473auJZtAPr7O-fhGikWkDb4Cv2hFzXLWxOPyhcUOlG8adPdPaE4cw/s320/20160706_221039.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are my cut piles. The squares of fabric in the front are one of each of the fabrics used.<br />

The colours were gorgeous and I had been wanting to make a blue and green quilt for a while. I shamelessly copied Sandy's colours when it came time to make it. I like big quilts which are big enough for a bed, so needed to make 9 of the 24 inch blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNrxATPDQKuimeJLDxd-RfBOHm6mN7OooSKEf1a58uHEVf2aB08Y7kxvykpvVZZYVe483-YUKoH6W_kdJ1Xvz0Zk99t14dFx7oFA9LjutE4XKWffnb2onUysDTbOqfNjT924tWTwFvbh4/s1600/20160625_220025.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNrxATPDQKuimeJLDxd-RfBOHm6mN7OooSKEf1a58uHEVf2aB08Y7kxvykpvVZZYVe483-YUKoH6W_kdJ1Xvz0Zk99t14dFx7oFA9LjutE4XKWffnb2onUysDTbOqfNjT924tWTwFvbh4/s320/20160625_220025.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This quilt didn't really need a border but I admit to being partial to them, and prefer the way a quilt with a border looks on the bed. I went ahead and added 4.<br />
The quilt ended up being 87 inches square.<br />
Quilting-I decided to do a simple stipple for this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6FyGCtcRJ0CFT5_PmkcM76G6PRxn8pPZsetTQ49JquClgrQlz-KR8DYcmUx-7-FKR1eH5L31v1Oyqi3TNEAAsxvfA4iGS2ckhevNcD_nOxCoRWv-5PJqP48CiFeBp3D1zpIpKfoE5520/s1600/20160630_163209.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6FyGCtcRJ0CFT5_PmkcM76G6PRxn8pPZsetTQ49JquClgrQlz-KR8DYcmUx-7-FKR1eH5L31v1Oyqi3TNEAAsxvfA4iGS2ckhevNcD_nOxCoRWv-5PJqP48CiFeBp3D1zpIpKfoE5520/s320/20160630_163209.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had made some aqua blocks which I decided to replace. I instead made some blue-green blocks and some green-blue. The original blocks were perfect for making up the extra backing needed. The quilt was too wide for just 2 widths of fabric. I think they look great in a line.</div>

We did a block swap of the Woven block which had to be made with at least 2 Kaffe Collective fabrics, up to 2 blenders with a white tone on tone background. We then had to make a quilt using our blocks.<br />
<br />
I decided to combine the challenge with the idea of circles. Several of the group are doing a circle quilt, inspired by the 365 Circles that is running this year.<br />
<br />
I joined and sashed the woven blocks and treated it as a large square, then just made a giant Square in a Square block. I liked the centre diamond floating rather than touching at the edges.<br />
The sashing is bright pink Aboriginal Dots and the border is Kaffe's Dahlia Blooms. The binding is Ribbon Stripe<br />
<br />

<br />
Quilting-each of the elements is quilted differently. The centre is cross hatched, following the lines created by the blocks. The Circle triangles have organic wavy lines and the border has a scroll design.<br />

Size is 85 inches square<br />
<br />
Following a suggestion from Korrinna and based on our group name, the quilt is called Sew Let's Kaffe.<br />
<br />
This is finish No 10 this year<br />

After making a small quilt last month, I was determined to make time for a bigger one this month.<br />
The May block is called May Blooms, and is a wonderful large flower block of 24 inches.<br />
I have 2 options for a recipient, and both love pansies, so I decided to try to make my flowers into pansies. <br />
<br />
I found 4 Fat Quarter bundles amongst my stash which gave me sets of 3 shades of the same colour in the way I was looking for. There are Butterflies by Lizzy House, Mixmasters Fizz by Robert Kaufmann, Dream by Timeless Treasures and Pepper Corry's Brushstrokes. Always great not to have to buy extra fabric<br />
<br />
Some of the flowers I graduated colour from light to dark, and others I reversed the order. This was to show the different types of pansies. The same went with the centre's of the flowers, which were again alternated. The yellow centre's have the black outside them to represent the "faces" of the pansies.<br />

<br />
The quilt finished at 80.5 inches, so it grew quickly.<br />
I quilted this with Aurifil white colour 24 in a all-over swirl and petal design.<br />

Originally I planned on a 3rd border of yellow, but after these I felt it was enough. Seeing the Red Bridge photo I think the extra yellow border would have been good too.<br />

A quick word about the Red Bridge for those who don't know about it. This pedestrian bridge is in Feilding a town less than 10 minutes from our home. When I was looking for somewhere to photograph a large quilt a couple of years ago, I found this. The large quilts can hang down so the full quilt can be seen. The redness with the green grass and trees in the background is a great setting for many of the quilts. The Council even painted the bridge shortly after I started using it, so from dull red it has become a bright shiny orange-red.<br />
Now most of my quilts get a Red Bridge photo.<br />

I love <a href="http://www.ohfransson.bigcartel.com/" target="_blank">Elizabeth Hartman's</a> animal patterns and had made some of her other animal blocks. I had made up some Fox blocks as a test maybe a year ago. These 4 test blocks eventually got made into a tote bag by a lovely friend.<br />
<br />
This quilt has a background of Michael Miller Pinhead Dots in Fog, with the foxes made from many different orange, rust coral and red fabrics. I wanted a larger size than the kit made up, so I gathered a few extra fabrics than provided in the fabric bundle. <br />
The pattern is borderless, and I have yet to see it otherwise but I wanted a border to add a bit if size and to keep the foxes contained. I chose the darkest fox fabric for this, and am happy with how this works.<br />

In January my scrap strips bins ( especially the 2 1/2 inch strips) were overflowing, so I decided it was time to get started.<br />
I have never been organised enough to have a blog post ready for Saturday, so today I have finally managed it.<br />
In view of the fact that I wanted to use 2 1/2 inch strips, and that the resulting quilt would eventually be gifted, I decided on Bonnie Hunter's Boxy Stars for my block.<br />
My goal was to 3 or 4 of each colour.<br />
<br />
January's blue with purple was an easy enough colour, but February's Brown with pink was a challenge. I hardly ever use brown, so lots of pink was added. I only managed 2 decent blocks and one paler one, which will need to be replaced.<br />
March's Purple also proved difficult. I didnt realise how few purples I used. I did have plenty of F Qs of it so I scraped together 3 blocks<br />
April-another one which surprised me. While I have plenty in my stash and had been using a lot of orange in for the Fancy Fox quilt, there was not much in my scrap bins. Again the stash of FQs came in handy<br />
